Retro glory

Trailer for "The Toaster With TWO BRAINS" from Bradley W. Schenck on Vimeo.

Here's the retro-futuristic trailer for my new project, "Thrilling Tales of the Downright Unusual". The Thrilling Tales web site hosts lightly interactive, densely illustrated stories from Retropolis - the world of the Future That Never Was. The stories can be viewed in their entirety on the web site (with a few nifty web-only features) for free - but they can also be purchased as full color printed books that you can read on the porch, or in the passenger seat (please!) of your flying car.

The first story to appear on the Thrilling Tales web site (which is at http://thrilling-tales.webomator.com/ ) is "Trapped in the Tower of the Brain Thieves" - Part one of "The Toaster With TWO BRAINS". This trailer features some art from that story and a few other things that I threw into the mix.

I've built the site and that first story over a period of nine months. While updates shouldn't take as long there is a large amount of work that goes into the illustrations for one of these; the web version of "Brain Thieves", for example, has 82 story illustrations and some other art. So in the next stage I plan to also add a current "non-interactive" story to provide some more frequent updates.

Anyway, there you go: and although I do understand that Vimeo isn't here for commercials, I also know that there's a specific exemption for individual artists who want to promote their work. And, you know, that's me. I'm as so individual that even the the ad banners at the Thrilling Tales site all lead to other sites of mine. S'aright?

Origin of the emoticon in 1982

September 19th 1982 and Scott Fahlman invents the :-) emoticon.

1982: At precisely 11:44 a.m., Scott Fahlman posts the following electronic message to a computer-science department bulletin board at Carnegie Mellon University:

I propose that the following character sequence for joke markers:

Read it sideways. Actually, it is probably more economical to mark things that are NOT jokes, given current trends. For this, use:

TapeDeck

TapeDeck
Originally uploaded by Mooganic.

Trying out the latest version of Tape deck. The rather cute retro audio recorder. The latest version adds the ability to post directly to Youtube, with a video of the tape machine playing. Tape Deck is fun and easy to use, automatically organsising your recordings into "tapes" which are held in the slide out drawer (yes with sound effects of a drawer opening). TapeDeck records compressed AAC audio at the following settings:

High Quality - 44,100Hz, 16-bit, 64kbps (mono) or 128kbps (stereo)
Medium Quality - 44,100Hz, 16-bit, 48kbps (mono) or 96kbps (stereo)
Low Quality - 22,050Hz, 16-bit, 32kbps (mono) or 64kbps (stereo)

$25 from http://tapedeckapp.com/  created by the excellently named Super Ultra Mega Groovy company.
