Delia Derbyshire Day 2021

 https://deliaderbyshireday.com/delia-derbyshire-day-2021/

Electronic music charity Delia Derbyshire Day has announced a feast of activity taking place on Delia Derbyshire Day 2021, fixed in the cultural calendar as 23 NOVEMBER — the date Delia’s revolutionary realisation of Ron Grainer’s Dr Who theme first beamed into British living rooms (in 1963).

The main focus of DD Day 2021 will be the Livestream premiere of two new audio-visual works produced by four commissioned North West England-based artists, inspired by Delia and her archive in Manchester.

The online content to be published on 23 November will include:

ONLINE LIVESTREAM EVENT - 7-8pm - supported by Bluedot, the commissioned artists present their new work. To be presented on Bluedot's YouTube and Facebook channels.

WEBSITE CONTENT - including publishing the transcripts from our popular series of masterclasses/expert talks unpacking the work, working methods and archive of Delia Derbyshire.

VIDEO PREMIERE – of a specially commissioned track from 2020 featuring
sounds from the DD Archive and the voice of an inimitable British actor.

COMPETITION – Public are invited to post a photo with your favourite DD Day merch on your social media on DD Day 2021 (23 NOV) for the chance to win a copy of a re-issue of Tape Leaders, the bookby Ian Helliwell - of course including Delia. Tag us to join in. Remember, imagination is the theme for this year!

Full details on the website https://deliaderbyshireday.com/delia-derbyshire-day-2021/

This year's Livestream will be hosted with the support of Bluedot (Winner medium UK Festival, 2019 at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire), who will provide live streaming of this year's event via their YouTube and Facebook channels.

Thoughtful doc on art today

The digital revolution of the last decade has unleashed creativity and talent in an unprecedented way, with unlimited opportunities.

But does democratized culture mean better art or is true talent instead drowned out? Zoe Skoulding & Alan Holmes

Zoe Skoulding & Alan Holmes performance at Arts for the Earth from Peter Morgan on Vimeo.

Excerpt of a performance at the Green Room, Porthcawl. Presented by Arts for the Earth. 4th February 2011. Nick Clements began the evening with a talk about creativity and his work.

Zoƫ Skoulding is a poet and editor, now in charge of the international
quarterly, ‘Poetry Wales’. Zoe’s latest book, ‘Remains of a Future City’ (Seren)
was on the “Welsh Book of the Year list, 2008.

One of the most exciting aspects of Zoe’s work is her combination of poetry
with experimental soundscapes, based on collaborations with many
musicians.

One of these is Alan Holmes, who has played in a host of adventurous rock
groups in Wales, including Ectogram, and is praised by critics for his “sheer
inventiveness.” This is Alan’s first visit to Porthcawl, an occasion modern
music-lovers should not miss.

How to achieve the highest sound quality from Ableton Live

Many of the default settings in Ableton Live are intended to optimise playback smoothness and keep CPU usage low. This is great for performance and working on a track but doesn’t provide the highest sound quality available from Live.

Perhaps you are at the final stage of a project and you wish to ensure you have the absolute highest quality playback and effects to bounce down a high quality recording. This is when you can tweak settings to achieve higher quality output. All these settings will increase the load on your CPU and you may want to freeze tracks before and after engaging the high quality settings.

Cheapest way to connect two Macs for Logic Node use

Logic Node allows you to utilise the power of two or more Macs when working in Logic Pro. The Logic Node software provided with Logic distributes the computing power required to run plugins and greatly reduces the load on the CPU of the main Mac used for the DAW, this is great for matching up say a Mac Pro with a Macbook or harnessing the power of a second hand Mac Mini to boost your existing set up. However it relies on the use of Gigabit ethernet (1000 base or 1000 kBits ethernet) connections to enable fast communications between your Macs to prevent any latency being added. Slower connections such as the more common 100 base ethernet may work but are unreliable in practice.

This is fine if you have a router or switch that supports Gigabit ethernet but if you don't and are unwilling to splash out on a expensive new router or ethernet switch hub just for Logic Node, then here's a simple, fast and cheap way of connecting two Macs. Apple states that you need at least a PPC G5 mac with Gigabit ethernet connections.

Use a crossover cable - the best approach is to use an existing ethernet cable and an adapter for gigabit connection. This is more flexible in the long run as you can change the cable attached at a later date if you need a longer or shorter length if equipment is re-positioned.

I found the Hama Cat 5 Crossover adapter works fine (link below) is well made and great value.

So try out Logic Node simply, and cheaply! (More notes are in the comments)

Logic 9.1 64bit update - Logic Node is not yet supported when running in 64 bit mode. (Jan 2010)
