SoundCloud suffers DDOS attack

Message from Soundcloud

We would like to apologize for yesterday's service outage.

Audio message from Alex:
http://soundcloud.com/alex/thanks-and-were-sorry-at/s-4SBID

On Tuesday October 4 at approximately 8:40pm CET, our Operations team were
alerted to an unusually high amount of unidentified traffic leading to a complete
network outage. Within minutes, our CTO, VP Engineering, Head of Operations and
all available Operations engineering resources were deployed to investigate
the issue and we worked around the clock to locate and resolve it.

We identified the problem as being a major distributed denial of service (DDoS)
attack and initially resolved it around 6.30am CET.

After seeing the service stabilize for a few hours yesterday morning, unfortunately
a second denial of service attack occurred around noon CET as the attackers adjusted
to our preventive measures. This attack delayed full mitigation until we were able
to implement more robust measures which are now in place. Around 7pm CET last night,
our scalable defensive measures were in place and we were able to stabilize the service
gradually. As of this morning, all services are fully back and operational.

Our databases including your data were not affected by these attacks. Rest assured
that we'll do everything in our power to prevent such an outage from happening again.
Our engineering teams will continue to assess the situation moving forward.

Again, our sincere apologies for letting you down. We are humbled by the continued
support you've shown us in your Tweets, comments and emails, proof that the
SoundCloud Community is special.

Thank you,

Alex, Co-Founder and CEO | Eric, Co-Founder and CTO

Nikon Facebook PR blunder "A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses..."

Crass error, most likely an intern with the social media PR firm used to update the Nikon facebook page. Over two thousand mostly angry comments.

"Do any of our facebook fans use any of the NIKKOR lenses?" asks the insightful poster. Note the "any". Completely clueless.

and the follow up comment from Nikon...

Trying out the new Topaz Labs B&W Effects plugin. Certainly gives Silver Efex Pro 2 a run for the money - it's far more affordable and has a very good selection of effects. Liking it so far!

It's a shame the selling of prints via fotomoto is so US centric.

Zoe Skoulding & Alan Holmes

Zoe Skoulding & Alan Holmes performance at Arts for the Earth from Peter Morgan on Vimeo.

Excerpt of a performance at the Green Room, Porthcawl. Presented by Arts for the Earth. 4th February 2011. Nick Clements began the evening with a talk about creativity and his work.

Zoë Skoulding is a poet and editor, now in charge of the international
quarterly, ‘Poetry Wales’. Zoe’s latest book, ‘Remains of a Future City’ (Seren)
was on the “Welsh Book of the Year list, 2008.

One of the most exciting aspects of Zoe’s work is her combination of poetry
with experimental soundscapes, based on collaborations with many
musicians.

One of these is Alan Holmes, who has played in a host of adventurous rock
groups in Wales, including Ectogram, and is praised by critics for his “sheer
inventiveness.” This is Alan’s first visit to Porthcawl, an occasion modern
music-lovers should not miss.

Taking notes on the Pink Beach - Topaz Labs Plugin processing technique

Created using Topaz Labs, first clean then processed again using adjust to alter exposure and colour saturation. All worked on via Aperture 3 (not layers in Photoshop). Processing things through multiple passes with the Topaz Labs plugins can produce some very rich textures and effects.

If you use a layers based application like Photoshop or Pixelmator etc. you can isolate the impact of effects by employing a layer mask and brushing in or away one of the effects. This can be particularly useful if you wanted a pseudo HDR effect on a background but wished to keep a face looking more natural.
